That's why we chose the speakerphone for our logo: to show how people can share their stories, culture and identity through their food.
Food is a powerful communication tool.
When Yuru moved to the UK, she found herself distanced from the tastes and traditions that once felt like home. Like many international students, she adapted as best she could, turning to what was available, exchanging the familiarity of dishes rich in heritage for convenient alternatives that could never quite capture the same meaning or memory.
Yet beyond the surface of the high street, she began to notice something more intimate and quietly powerful. In kitchens, at shared tables, and during moments of celebration, there existed a living archive of culture expressed through food. From her household’s weekly hotpot to festive gatherings with friends, she encountered cooks whose recipes carried history, identity, and a deep sense of belonging.
It was here that the idea for Hey! Food is Ready began to take shape during her time at Durham University. She envisioned a platform that would honour these culinary traditions by bringing them into the public sphere, creating opportunities for cooks from diverse backgrounds to share their craft at events across the UK. In doing so, she sought not only to support local communities through meaningful income, but also to elevate and celebrate the richness of underrepresented food cultures.
In September 2021, that vision became a reality. After months of planning, conversations, pitching, and an ever growing appreciation for the stories behind each dish, a collective of talented cooks came together and began this journey.
Today, Hey! Food is Ready is a reflection of many voices. It is shaped by the people who share their recipes, their heritage, and their creativity with us every day. Each dish is more than a meal. It is an expression of culture, memory, and artistry.

Alongside this, our online spaces offer a sense of home beyond geography, where cooks come together to exchange stories, techniques, and recipes that carry the essence of their journeys.
Within diasporic communities, knowledge is often passed hand to hand, kitchen to kitchen, shaped by lived experience. We honour this tradition by creating spaces where that exchange can continue to thrive.
