Breaking Fast, Building Bridges: Celebrating Ramadan at Mathys & Squire

Food has always been more than nourishment. It is a form of storytelling, a reflection of heritage, and a bridge between cultures. This Ramadan, we brought those elements together at Mathys & Squire through a thoughtfully curated food event that celebrated not only the act of breaking fast, but the rich art and cultural traditions behind it.

Ramadan is a deeply significant time for Muslims around the world. It is a month of fasting from dawn to sunset, centred on reflection, discipline, generosity, and community. Each day ends with iftar, the moment of breaking the fast, often shared in vibrant, communal settings filled with food, conversation, and connection. The month concludes with Eid al Fitr, a celebration marked by joy, gratitude, and togetherness.

For some within the Mathys & Squire team, Ramadan is a personal and spiritual journey. For others, it may be less familiar. This event created an opportunity to bring those experiences together, inviting everyone to engage not just with the tradition, but with the culture and creativity that surrounds it.

We curated a South Asian inspired menu, drawing on the region’s deep culinary heritage where recipes are passed down through generations and meals are crafted with both flavour and meaning. From golden, crisp samosas to hearty chickpea curry and fragrant buttermilk chicken, each dish carried its own story. The colours, spices, and aromas transformed the space into something more than a workplace. It became a shared cultural experience.

As employees gathered to break the fast, conversations flowed naturally. People shared stories, asked questions, and connected over something both simple and profound, a shared meal. In that space, cultural understanding was not taught. It was experienced.

Celebrating Ramadan in the workplace is about more than recognition. It is about creating an environment where people feel seen, where traditions are respected, and where differences become a source of inspiration rather than division. It is about acknowledging that culture, like art, is something to be shared, explored, and appreciated together.

This event was a reminder that inclusivity can be both meaningful and beautiful. Through food, culture, and connection, we created a moment that resonated beyond the evening itself, one that strengthened relationships and brought a deeper sense of belonging to the team.

As Ramadan continues and Eid approaches, we carry forward that spirit of openness and celebration. Because when we make space for each other’s stories, we do not just build better workplaces. We create richer, more human ones.
